U.S. Federal judge reject Apple’s complaint over Amazon’s Appstore

Back in March 2011, Apple filed a case against Amazon’s Appstore, stating that similar names would confuse and even mislead people into thinking that the two stores were related. California federal judge Phyllis Hamilton dismissed the complaint recently, stating that he couldn’t find anything to support Apple’s claim against Amazon.

Back in 2008, Apple did apply to trademark the name “App Store”, but since the term “app” is commonly used for mobile applications (and even some desktop utility/software) this was not going to be possible. The word “store” is common too. Amazon also noted late Steve Job’s definition of “apps” and “app store” in general:

So there will be at least four app stores on Android, which customers must search among to find the app they want and developers will need to work with to distribute their apps and get paid. This is going to be a mess for both users and developers. Contrast this with Apple’s integrated App Store, which offers users the easiest-to-use largest app store in the world, pre-loaded on every iPhone.
