Uber President Jeff Jones Steps Down Citing Differences in Beliefs

Uber President Jeff Jones has stepped down from the leadership position from the increasingly troubled ride-hailing company after less than a year. The move follows Uber’s several missteps including accusations of sexually harassment in the workplace, #deleteuber backlash, accusations of stealing corporate secrets and leaked video showing CEO Travis Kalanick berating an Uber driver.

In a statement released to Recode.net, said Jones stated:

I joined Uber because of its Mission, and the challenge to build global capabilities that would help the company mature and thrive long-term.

It is now clear, however, that the beliefs and approach to leadership that have guided my career are inconsistent with what I saw and experienced at Uber, and I can no longer continue as president of the ride sharing business.

There are thousands of amazing people at the company, and I truly wish everyone well.

Uber has also confirmed Jeff Jones’ departure in a statement saying that “(Uber) wants to thank Jeff for his six months at the company and wish him all the best.”

In a note to staff, Uber CEO Travis Kalanick further added that “After we announced our intention to hire a COO, Jeff came to the tough decision that he doesn’t see his future at Uber. It is unfortunate that this was announced through the press but I thought it was important to send all of you an email before providing comment publicly.”

Jeff Jones and Travis Kalanick met in Vancouver last year at a TED Conference and Jones was quickly brought on from Target where he was a well-regarded CMO to improve Uber’s public image. Kalanick acknowledged that his 6-month tenure at Uber had an important impact to the company. There is no clear candidate on who will replace Jones yet.
