Ubisoft Report Increased PC Game Sales

Ubisoft as a game developer is a company which has a fairly mixed reputation within the community. By mixed, I think I’m perhaps being too generous, but you get the idea. I doubt they top any ones favourite developer list.

Despite them having a hand in some of the worst (or at least worst received) PC releases, Ubisoft has confirmed that sales of their PC games have increased in the last 5 years.

Why?!

A good question. When you compare Assassins Creed and Watch Dogs, you wonder why anyone would bother. Personally, I have never forgiven Ubisoft for deliberately dumbing down the PC release of Watch Dogs. Let alone the mess it was on launch.

There is, however, a factor most of us are ignoring here. Those games are a primarily single player type. We are not considering that Ubisoft has its hand in some fairly big online multiplayer games.

The Division

Despite, again, many critics (particularly of what was felt to be a pay-to-win microtransaction system) The Division was a success on the PC. In addition to this though, Ubisoft has clearly made a shift towards RPG gaming, something which has always been popular on PCs.

In a report via DSOGaming, such releases have seen PC sales for Ubisoft increase by around 11% over the last 5 years.

Why this is a good thing!

As I started with, I doubt that many of you would list Ubisoft as your favourite development. Particularly if you primarily play their games on PC. Increased sales for the PC format is, however, a good thing. Why? Because if Ubisoft view the platform as a genuine money maker, they might actually start investing money in it. You know, making games that are actually playable on launch.

Yes, I know, that’s a bit harsh, but I’m sorry, I’ve just been burnt by Ubisoft too many times in the past. They need to step up their PC game if they want to win my love and affection back.

What do you think? Surprised at the sales figures? What do you think of Ubisoft? Should they invest more in PC development? – Let us know in the comments!
