While the UK and USA’s governments talk strong anti-chemical weapons rhetoric against Assad’s Syrian government, do they even know where Syria’s capital city Damascus is? Well according to usvsth3m.com of 65 people in the American department of defence 43% couldn’t locate Syria accurately. In the UK the figures were slightly better for the UK Houses Of Parliament, 139 guesses showed that only 36% of them could not locate Damascus.
Of course the game is a bit of light-hearted fun and many probably intentionally picked wrong to make some kind of political statement, or even just to make a joke. What’s worrying though is that in the case of the American statistics it seems likely many of them genuinely weren’t sure where Damascus actually was and let’s be honest – that’s worrying.
This light-hearted take on a serious situation serves to reinforce the key issue of why are the UK and USA even trying to get involved? – especially if they do not even know where Syria is or what the purpose of Syrian intervention is. The USA’s White House has stated it will consider limited military action against Syria while the UK’s attempt at military intervention was defeated in parliament.
