Epic Games has released the latest version of the Unreal Engine, the first to feature official support for Nintendo’s forthcoming Switch console. The Switch support in Unreal Engine 4.15 is “experimental” for now, but Epic promises that it will be in a “shippable state” by the next release of the engine.
“We have partnered with Nintendo to help Unreal Engine 4 developers bring their games to Nintendo Switch!” Epic Games writes in the release notes for Unreal Engine 4.15. “We have added early support for developing games for the Nintendo Switch console. It is still considered experimental in this release. We plan for it to be in a shippable state in the next release.”
Unreal Engine 4.15 features a plethora of improvements, from a 50% reduction in compile times to a new Blendspace Editor and new mathematics Blueprint nodes.
Last week, Nintendo maestro Shigeru Miyamoto revealed that the developers at the Japanese company had been delving deep into Unreal Engine, boasting that they had mastered the game-making tool during a Q&A for investors. “Nintendoʼs software developers have mastered state-of-the-art technologies such as Unreal engine, and their skills can now be compared with those of Western developers,” Miyamoto said. “Our developers are more excited than ever to create software.”
The Nintendo Switch is launched on 3rd March.
