Upcoming Half-Life 2: VR Mod Looks Promising

Even though Half-Life 3 is likely never going to happen, there’s still some hope on the horizon for those of you who want to enjoy Half-Life 2 in a more immersive way. We’re talking about a very promising Half-Life 2 VR mod, which is currently being designed for Oculus Rift and HTC Vive headsets. We first caught wind of this mod back in 2013, and it definitely matured quite a bit over the years. However, without some serious attention, it wouldn’t be compatible with modern-day hardware, and that’s why a team of talented modders took it to Steam Greenlight. Thanks to its recent updates, the project will be fully compatible with Oculus Rift and HTC Vive.

What Happened To The Original Mod?

Valve decided to stop updating the original mod’s Source engine in order to keep up with modern hardware, which is mainly what caused the project’s abandonment. The new team consists of both original members and fresh faces. They all came together and managed to implement support for motion controllers, which is a pretty big step. Other important additions include updated effects, textures, models & maps, as well as realistic weapon interactions. We should also mention the new 3D interface designed specifically for VR, and the multiple VR locomotion methods. While the mod itself will be free of charge, gamers will need to own HL2 as well as HL2: Episode 1 and 2.
