Several months ago, it was announced that Paddington director Paul King is in talks to helm the next Willy Wonka movie. Up until now, details were scarce on what exactly the movie will be about. However, Collider now reports that the next movie for the magical chocolatier will actually be a prequel, exploring his origin story.
It should be obvious to anyone who has seen the film that there certainly are plenty of questions that need to be asked. How was the factory started? How did Willy Wonka come up with the idea of a Golden Ticket? Did Willy Wonka enslave a race of orange little people to work in his factory? Where did the Oompa Loompas come from? and there is a lot more.
Aside from director Paul King, Warner Bros. is apparently eyeing either Ryan Gosling or Donald Glover for the title role. Both having experience with musicals and film. Gosling with Lala Land in particular. Both are also currently high-profile actors who can carry a lead role in a film.
Simon Rich, who has written for Saturday Night Live, The Simpsons and Pixar’s Inside Out will be writing the script. David Hayman of Harry Potter and Fantastic Beasts fame will be producing.
When Collider asked Hayman regarding how the project is going, he had this to say:
“We are still trying to figure out how to tell that story, what the story is. It’s a prequel, it’s not a sequel. What makes Willy—when we find him at the chocolate factory doing the golden ticket, where is he before that? What leads him to that place where he’s locked himself away?… It’s how does he get there? So we’re playing around with that.”
