Updated PS4 RDR2 Bundle Model Reportedly Much Quieter
As much as I love my PS4 (and have no regrets over making that my choice over the Xbox One), there is one thing I hate about it. Put simply, when I’m running games the cooling fan on it sound like a jet engine attempting to take off. It’s a factor that eventually led me to give up playing many games on it. Not because I wasn’t enjoying them, but because the noise of the console was just so damn obtrusive.
In a report via Kotaku though, as part of a Red Dead Redemption 2 bundle, the updated model is reported as being much, much, quieter.
How Much Quieter?
The 7200 model is an update of the PS4 Pro and, to date, has only been released as part of the RDR2 bundle. Despite this though, early figures show that it might be anywhere near as quiet as 5dba over the existing PS4 Pro or original version. It seems, however, that the updated version, surprisingly, actually runs hotter. Sony may have cheated their way into making it quieter.
Fan Speed
One of the biggest reasons for the noise level in the PS4 is the use of the single ‘blower’ style fan. This has to work exceptionally hard to keep things nice and cool. With the 7200 model though, while this has been retained, it would appear that Sony has simply adjusted the fan to run slower.
In brief, Sony has raised the fan speed based on the temperature. This does, of course, result in a higher ‘base’ console temperatures. So you can make of this what you will. Would you rather have a quieter console or the concern of overheating? Based on the racket my PS4 makes, I’d take the former!
If you were tempted with this update though, as above, at present it’s only being sold in RDR2 bundles.
