USB 3.0 uptake rising rapidly

According to the firm Renesas, the number of USB 3.0 motherboard controller devices shipped reached 30 million by May 19th (thursday last week). The figure has taken 18 months to achieve but the speed at which it is is rising has been accelerating of late.

The company had started production of the first USB 3.0 controller the “µPD720200” and plans to double production of those chips from 3 million to 6 million from that start of June 2011. Note that this also coincides with the release of AMDs new Bulldozer processor and chipset which is expected to bring USB 3.0 to the mainstream market.

Yukihiko Matsuda assosciate general manager of a division at Renesas said that: “The fact that our USB 3.0 host controllers surpassed the 30m cumulative shipment mark in just one and a half years serves as a clear demonstration that Renesas Electronics is the leader in the USB 3.0 market, To address the increasing adoption and orders from both new and existing customers in a timely manner, we decided to ramp up our production, and in the meantime, our product lineups will continue to evolve, expanding their possibilities by adding new features to further respond to customer requirements.”
