VideoLAN has released a new private beta of its versatile media player VLC for Universal Windows Platform (UWP), which introduces support for Xbox One, HoloLens, and Windows 10 Mobile, in addition to the usual Windows PC support.

The news was revealed by Thomas Nigro, Microsoft’s Regional Director and Developer of VLC for Windows Store, in the following tweet:

Nigro followed up later with an assurance that VLC will support Windows Holographic output via HoloLens:

A VLC contributor later posted an image of the private beta running on the latest HoloLens build:

Microsoft recently posted an update regarding its latest iteration of HoloLens, which was released for developers back in March:

The second wave of the Microsoft HoloLens, which includes new multi-tasking, Edge support, and input features, has recently been dispatched to developers.

The open source VLC is one of the most popular media players in the world, mainly due to its native support for most video and audio formats without the need to download additional codec packs. The software celebrated its fifteenth anniversary this year. The new version of VLC is expected to replace both VLC for Windows Store and the traditionally installed version available from the VideoLAN website once it is out of beta.
