Valve’s plans for virtual reality are starting to look very promising, as the company has just released a very impressive YouTube video that highlights a pair of new VR demos. When the video starts off, you might be inclined to believe that you’re looking at the real world, but once P-Body from Portal 2 shows up, it’s quite obvious that you are admiring virtual reality at its finest. This outstanding realism was achieved with the help of a technique called photogrammetry. Photogrammetry has been used by gaming developers in the past in order to insert real objects in a digital space. The Vanishing of Ethan Carter, a horror adventure game from 2014, made use of this process in order to deliver a realistic and positively frightening experience for gamers.
Valve is definitely making good progress as far as virtual reality is concerned, and if they keep moving forward at this pace, virtual reality will end up looking quite similar to reality. I for one can’t wait to get my hands on some VR hardware and get immersed in a virtual world. Have a look at the following video if you want to see Valve’s VR demos in action.
