How Much Does it Cost?

The price of the Varmilo Beijing Opera is a little bit complex, as you can buy one on Amazon for £192.49, not cheap I know, but keep in mind the overall quality of this keyboard is next-level, so you’re getting what you pay for. However, it’s around $160 directly from Varmilo, but your import fees could make Amazon the cheaper option, in the long run, it’s tricky to know if I’m honest. However, as with all Varmilo products, you can buy just the number pad, various keyboard sizes, layouts, switch variants, and even a matching desk mat. Check out the range here.

Overview

I’m not even sure where to begin with this keyboard, it really is quite unlike anything else I’ve reviewed before. The level of history and detail that Varmilo poured into the overall design is awe-inspiring though. From the larger aspects such as the main theme artwork to the unique translation for some of the keys and even some letters. However, it’s the overall fit and finish that impressed me the most. The feel of the keyboard, with all its textures and finishes are impressive. I love that you can feel the pattern of the bronze inlay design on the casing.

It’s certainly a well-made keyboard too, with a good weight to it that tells me they’ve got a decent level of material here. The weight helps reduce movement, vibrations and also soaks up the force of typing, reducing the overall noise of the keyboard. I’m surprised they used Mini-USB for the cable, but hey, I suppose that doesn’t hurt the performance. On the plus side, the cable is detachable, so you can swap it out in the future if you so desire. The inclusion of a key cap puller, some additional caps in the box are welcome additions too.

There are some considerations to make though. This keyboard is only available in ANSI layout, which is fine with me but may not suit your needs. Furthermore, it is not compatible with Mac OS as it lacks the usual shortcut keys. You should stick to Windows OS in general for this one.

Should I Buy One?

It’s pretty expensive, so obviously won’t appeal to all. However, this is basically their flagship, and if you want something different, they’ve got a pretty exciting range to pick from. However, for those who want something unlike every other keyboard out there, this one really does grab your attention. While the looks seem to be everything, keep in mind, the excellent choice of switches and the full mechanical design make this a very competent and enjoyable keyboard for your work, your gaming, or even your gaming at work.
