When the Rasperry Pi’s $25 PC went up for pre-order it sold out within a few hours, VIA’s $49 APC has done exactly the same. The ARM based system is sized in the neo-ITX form factor and is a complete system on one board. It will ship with a custom Android-2.3 based operating system allowing basic PC functionality. VIA is aiming to make these $49 PCs available at local distribution centres all over the world to reduce shipping costs for the consumer.
The first wave of pre-orders was listed at 10:30 pm Taiwan time (GMT+8) and sold out in under 2 hours. Those who had registered their email addresses with VIA were notified and up to 2 APC’s were allowed per customer. Anyone who pre-ordered is likely to receive one of these APCs by the end of July as shipping starts in early July.
