Why does Bacon smell so good? This question is probably up there with the most important questions of all time such as “what is the meaning of life?”, “does god exist?” and “does my bum look big in this?”. The science behind the question has now been explained (kind of) in the video below. YouTubers “Reactions” teamed up with the American Chemical Society to explain the science behind the smell of bacon. The concise answer is that there isn’t a single compound that explains the smell of bacon but instead a complex interaction of organic compounds based on hydrocarbons, aldehydes and nitrogen. The cooking process itself creates complex interactions of these existing compounds to form new compounds. Anyway I am no scientific expert so check out the video below and see what you think. It just might make your bacon sandwiches a bit more interesting (and conversation worthy) next time you have one!
