VR Gaming: Building Your Own Oculus Rig

Performance

Performance Benchmarks

Just to re-cap on the specifications, I’ve got the follow:

  • Gigabyte GA_Z68XP-UD3P
  • Intel Core i5 3570K @4.6Ghz.
  • 2 x Sapphire R9 280X Tri-X Vapor-X 3GB
  • Kingston 120GB SSD
  • Kingston HyperX Predator 2400Mhz DDR3 8GB Kit
  • Seasonic 1000W Platinum PSU

Here you can see the system I’ve put together offers up some impressive performance, to put it into perspective, a GTX 980 will bench around 11000, with a graphics score of around 13000. Remember that you can run the 3D Mark Fire Strike benchmark in the free version of the software (download here) to see how your hardware compares.

Again a very good score, especially when you consider a GTX 980 will again pull around 5600 with a graphics score of 5800.

Numbers only paint half of the picture, but there’s no doubt in my mind this is a solid gaming rig and so far, every Oculus Rift capable game has been running smooth as silk with the graphics dialed all the way up to ultra.

  1. I run it on MAX without AA in interlanced 3D around 50fps :] So Single watercooled 290x wont cut it. We will see how much of a jump will 390/390x be.
