Watch the Full AMD Capsaicin Presentation at Siggraph 2017

AMD held an hour and a half long presentation at Siggraph in LA to officially launch their new Ryzen Threadripper CPUs and Vega GPUs. While most keynote speeches at these types of events are padded with a lot of promotional content, AMD CEO Dr. Lisa Su instead packed it top to bottom with plenty of actual new product announcements. She was joined by other AMD notables such as Raja Koduri, Roy Taylor and more. Some of the announcements include:

  • The launch of the Radeon RX Vega family of GPUs, with availability starting from Aug. 14th, including three new products based on the “Vega” GPU architecture to redefine gaming and content creation:
    • Radeon RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition, engineered with 64 compute units to be the most powerful Radeon ever built
    • Radeon RX Vega 64 with air cooling
    • Standalone Radeon RX Vega 56, available starting at $399 USD SEP and the Radeon RX 64 is available starting at $499 USD SEP
  • The Radeon Pro WX 9100 workstation graphics card, delivering up to 12.3 TFLOPS of peak single precision compute for the most demanding media and entertainment, and design and manufacturing workloads.
  • AMD’s Radeon Pro SSGthe world’s first GPU to break the terabyte memory barrier with 2TB of graphics memory – will enable smooth, native 8K video editing in real time.
  • The Aug. 10 availability of the 16- and 12-core Ryzen Threadripper all currently available for pre-order
  • The Aug. 31 availability of the previously unannounced 8-core Ryzen Threadripper
  • The announcement of AMD Studios, an AMD initiative in Hollywood, California focused on advancing the technology of entertainment, creating hardware and software solutions for the ever-increasing demands of modern storytelling.
  • Introduced the new P47 together with Inventec, a massively parallel computing platform in a 2U form factor designed to excel in a range of tasks, from graphics virtualization to machine intelligence.

AMD Ryzen Threadripper

The AMD Ryzen Threadripper has been the subject of many rumours going as far back as last year. The massive CPU is the first time AMD is able to compete against Intel in the HEDT space and it is healthier than previous AMD flagship offerings. Available in a 16-core/32-thread 1950X and 12-core/24-thread 1920X, the Threadripper platform also boasts  64-lanes of PCIe 3.0. This is great news especially in comparison to Intel’s truncated platform. Best of all, even the flagship AMD Ryzen Threadripper 1950X will only retail for $999. This makes it much more affordable than Intel’s HEDT equivalent.

During Siggraph, AMD also announced a new 8-core, 16-threaded Ryzen Threadripper 1900X at an even more affordable $549 USD. The 1950X has a baseclock of 3.4GHz and a boost clock of 4.0GHz. This is the same boost clock as the 1920X, although that one starts a bit higher at 3.5GHz base clock. The 1900X on the other hand starts much higher at 3.8GHz and also boosts up to 4.0GHz. The 1900X will be available on August 31, while the 1950X and the 1920X will be available as early as August 10.
