Watch GTX 1080 Hit Insane FPS in Doom

Nvidia DOOM GTX 1080 Demo

During the GTX 1080 launch event, Nvidia wasn’t shy about touting the performance of their latest flagship. At just about the same price as the GXT 980Ti, the GTX 1080 manages to beat a 2way SLI of the 980Ti. With this massive jump in performance, the GTX 1080 is able to drive games at framerates we’ve never seen before. During the event, Nvidia demoed the upcoming DOOM game on the GTX 1080 with crazy fps.

Running on the Vulkan API, the GTX 1080 was able to hit 200fps while playing that game at 1080p Ultra settings. This is pretty impressive considering the graphical fidelity of the game with everything turned all the way up. Right now, the GTX 980Ti and FuryX would never be able to reach this kind of fps in games that are similarly demanding.

Of course, as with every tech demo, there are a number of caveats. The game is running on Vulkan which is the new API tuned for better performance and lower overhead. If the GTX 980Ti and Fury X were running Vulkan, they would likely see a good increase in their frames as well. The demo was also run at 1080p as well, so we can’t exactly extrapolate performance to other setups and resolutions.

Next, even with GDDR5X, the GTX 1080 actually has less memory bandwidth than the GTX980Ti/Titan X. While I doubt the card is bottlenecked, performance might not scale as well as we expect. Lastly, the biggest question is if playing Ultra on DOOM is worth it, as a mix of High/Ultra may offer the same graphical fidelity as Ultra but with a much lower performance requirement.

Overall, the demo drives home the fact that the GTX 1080 is the undisputed single GPU champion for now. Once the card nears its May 27th launch, we should see more benchmarks of current game titles so we can get a better sense of the performance. Hopefully, AMD’s Polaris 10 will provide some competition in the top-end segment.
