Setup & Installation
Setup was a breeze, since every cable is well labeled, the sub-woofer connection ports are well spaced and the system is relatively simple, I was able to have the device out of the box, plugged into my PC and up and running in around 5 minutes. The 3.5mm jack plug connection as well as the 3.5 > AUX adaptor ensure maximum compatibility with games consoles, TVs, computers and just about any other audio capable device on the market.
Music
I’m a big music fan and a musician, so it’s important to me that music sounds “right” and I like to think that I have a good ear for some of the finer details in the music I listen to and play. Firing up some of my favourite albums on the Moody didn’t disappoint me and while it did take some minor tweaking, the controls on the sub woofer for treble and bass are easy to use and offer a wide range of tones to both the subwoofer and the satalite speakers.
Movies
Music performance was rock solid from the Moody but the real performance was movies, while I generally prefer full surround sound for watching a film that isn’t always possible in terms of space for a lot of people. Vocal tracks cut through bright and clear from the satellite speakers without being muddied by the bass and so long as you don’t have the treble set too high they make for a pleasant watching experience that packs plenty of “wow” in more intensive action scenes.
Gaming
Firing up games like Battlefield 3, Shift 2 and Borderlands was a lot of fun with these speakers and the channel separation is still clear enough to pick out whats going on around you with plenty of detail to the sound, sure its not quite near the quality of my home cinema system, but its miles ahead of most “system in a box” 2.1 solutions. I did find the bass to be too heavy while gaming, but that was easily corrected from the subwoofer controls.
General Performance
One thing I haven’t mention yet is volume, or more precisely the sheer amount of it that these speakers generate. While this isn’t a bad thing for most people I have to issue this comment in two parts, firstly as a compliment to the speakers performance and secondly as a warning to those who don’t want to blow their windows out. These speakers are LOUD, much louder than I expect for this price range and you’ll find that a typical usage scenario for day-to-day gaming is achieved with the volume dial on about 3% of maximum, if your just after some day to day speakers, these may be too powerful.
What the Moody packs in performance and volume it lacks in balance and while this isn’t a major issue, you may find you need to tweak the treble and bass dials for each listening scenario such as movies, gaming and music to get the optimum listening experience, failure to set the dials right leaves the mid-ranges almost nonexistent and in my experience 30-40% bass and 70% treble were where the speakers perform their best.
