Wavemaster Stax 2.1 Speaker Review

Price
The Stax are supposed to retail at around £50-60 inc. Shipping, but I’ve seen a few great deals via Google over the last few weeks and at the time of writing you can pick them up for at little as £42 via Amazon with free shipping here in the UK. Stock outside of Europe is difficult to find at this time given that this is a German brand who have only recently expanded to the UK, although we expect that to improve in the not too distant future.
Overview
For this kind of price I think the Wavemaster Stax 2.1 are great value for money, they sound really nice while gaming, watching a movie or listening to music and for your average desktop user they’re more that loud enough. The thing that strikes me most is the build quality, while a bit weak in places, such as the use of cheap plastics in the satellite speakers, or hard-wired cables for the speakers, that’s really nothing you wouldn’t expect within this price range. However, there are a few parts of the build quality that stand out, such as the bass speaker being quite heavy and well made, the in-line controller feels like it’s from a set that costs twice as much and the thick metal bases and pivots on the satellite speakers are really durable too.
The design of the speakers looks great and should look great next to anyone’s monitor or wall mounted. The only downside about wall mounting them is that you cannot rotate the speakers left or right to get a good angle, but that’s hardly a deal breaker at this price.
So overall we have great sound quality, better than average build quality, a few nice bonuses such as the high-quality in-line controller with its headphone and line-in connections, wall mountable speakers and a budget friendly price tag. Overall these are not the greatest speakers in the world, but if you have a budget of £40-£50 then these should be right at the top of your list.
Pros
- In-line controller
- Great design
- Wall mountable speakers
- Clear bass and treble
- Competitive price
Cons
- Max volumes do distort a bit (to be expected on a set of this size)
- Poor availability outside out Europe
eTeknix says: “Powerful performance and a very funky design really make the Stax stand out from the crowd. Wavemaster are making a good name for themselves and the Stax are a welcome addition to their range.”
Thank you Wavermaster for providing us with this sample.
