A Closer Look
Over the last few years, Western Digital have been following a similar design pattern right across their 3.5″ range. The book like appearance started with the ‘My Book’ range of drives and with its low footprint and sleek looks, it has consequently become one of the most popular drives on the market. The My Cloud follows in the footsteps of the book design, however there is a change in the drives colour to white to reflect its cloud properties.
Along the upper edge of the casing and down the back is an array of ventilation holes which allow the system to dissipate heat passively. Alongside the hard drive, the My Cloud also packs a dual core ARM A9 CPU and 256MB RAM giving it not only a large capacity to play with, but the power to deliver as well.
Alongside more ventilation on the rear of the drive, the My Cloud comes with Gigabit LAN for local file transfers as well as internet connectivity, a USB3.0 port for attaching another drive to – for either backup purposes or storage expansion; a reset button, 12V DC power jack and a Kensington lock point.
On the underside we find yet more ventilation and besides a sticker detailing the units MAC address and serial number, there are four soft rubber feet to stop drive vibrations leading to resonant noise.
