Western Digital Hackers Claim Over 10TB of Data From The Company

A few weeks ago Western Digital fell victim to a network breach which as of today still remains unresolved though now the hackers have come forward with claims of what they have achieved.

Hackers Claim Stolen Data

Western Digital’s breach is still an ongoing matter and recently one of the “hackers” spoke to TechCrunch and shared details on the information that they have acquired which they claim is around 10 TB of data which is now being held for a ransom of a minimum of 8 figures. To verify their claims, the hackers shared a file with TechCrunch that had been digitally signed with Western Digital’s code-signing certificate which security researchers backed up. Information that was acquired ranged from phone numbers of higher-ups, internal emails as well as several others which they are now holding ransom to meet their initial motive of making money off the company.

Ransomware Message

In a section of an email to an executive, the hackers wrote:

“We only need a one-time payment, and then we will leave your network and let you know about your weaknesses. No lasting harm has been done. But if there are any efforts to interfere with us, our systems, or anything else. We will strike back,”

The unknown group claims that if Western Digital does not get back to them, their stolen data will be published on the website of the ransomware gang Alphv.

Customer Data?

At the moment it is unclear whether the hackers have access to customer data and whether we should be concerned about this situation, as of now it simply looks as though most of the data is related to internal staff and company information.

What do you think of this situation? Let us know in the comments.
