Western Digital introduce 5mm Hybrid SSHD drives only for OEMs

Western Digital have introduced a new line of SSHD hard drives to provide a solution as a middle ground between a SSD and the still affordable mechanical hard drive for ultrabooks and ultra-thin ultrabooks.

WD uses 24GB flash NAND with their 500GB (WD5000M13K) drive but it requires drivers to work with a system. Just like Seagate’s Momentus XT, this drive’s NAND will be used only for caching. There’s also a 1TB 2.5″ version (WD10S13X) with 7mm height that uses 24GB NAND as well.

Both the drives would most likely be available during the second half of the year.
