Western Digital have just extended their “WD Red” NAS series of mechanical hard drives to the 2.5 inch form factor. These drives are equipped with NASware 2.0 technology which maximises stability and compatibility with NAS boxes and with NAS usage scenarios.
Western Digital’s WD Red 2.5 inch NAS drives will only be available in 1TB or 750GB capacities so there is no opportunity to take advantage of the higher capacity 1.5TB and 2TB 2.5 inch drives that recently hit the market. Western Digital also announced the availability of its 4TB WD Red NAS 3.5 inch drive which joins the other capacity options that up to now stopped at 3TB.
Western Digital will be covering all WD Red hard drives with a 3 year limited warranty. The MSRP of the WD Red 2.5 inch 1TB hard drive, model number WD10JFCX, is $99. The WD Red 2.5 inch 750GB hard drive will retail for $79, model number WD750BFCX and the new 4TB 3.5 inch WD Red NAS drive is going to hit the market at $229 with the part number WD40EFRX.
