Western Digital has provided another update on the security breach that the company experienced back in March.
Western Digital Security Breach Update
Back in March Western Digital fell victim to a network breach where an unauthorised party had gained access to their systems and had supposedly claimed over 10TB of data from the company. Yesterday the company provided another update on the ongoing issue which has caused them to leave their systems and services disconnected from the public internet. WD has confirmed in this update that the unauthorized party has obtained a copy of a WD database which was used for their online store. This database contained customer information including names, billing addresses, email addresses, telephone numbers as well as hashed and salted passwords and partial credit card numbers. WD is communicating directly with the customers who have been impacted by this data breach.
Other Reports
WD is aware of other information that has allegedly been leaked as well as the claim from the hackers that they could fraudulently use WD’s digital signing technology. The company has made it clear that they have control over their digital certificate infrastructure but it is not clear whether the attackers either did not have access to it in the first place or no longer have access to it.
