Western Digital VelociRaptor 3 x 1TB RAID 0 Review

Looking back to the single disk review, we did praise the VelociRaptor for its performance and all round package for its price point and getting the best bang for buck is where is where I’m going to focus this conclusion. We know that SSDs are pretty much the way to go these days if you want fast data transfer speeds in your system and this is more fact than fiction. The problem with SSDs though is their price per GB with hard drives having them well and truly trumped.
Taking three of the fastest mechanical drives on the market and sticking them together to get an fast speed may seem and expensive option and lets be fair it is considering most single SSD setups are not that far behind in performance, the SSD option does have its consequences; this being capacity. To get 3TB of capacity from SSDs alone your are going to be looking at spending in the region of £3000 which when marked against a trio of drives that cost only a fifth of that really doesn’t have much to talk about. (Ok the speeds would be insane in today’s light, but who is going to spend that sort of money just for capacity?)
So to simplify that a little better, if you want SSD speeds but also want the larger hard drive capacity all in one package with the best components on the market, sure you could spend £3000 on SSDs, but lets be truthful, who would do that when you can get the same capacity and SSD speeds for only a fifth of the cost? I know what I would do if it needed that, would you? I’m sure you’ll agree that this little trio of drives together shows the VelociRaptor’s have made a comeback and with a punch, surely its worth our extreme performance award.
