I’m a huge fan of the Metal Gear series, and while I was old enough to remember the launch of the original titles, my first introduction to the series was Metal Gear Solid on the PlayStation 1. Any of you who know about that game will know that it was in 3D, with some of the most iconic graphics in gaming history!
However, the older MSX2 classic Metal Gear and Metal Gear 2: Solid Snake were 2D top-down and isometric-style games. But as I said in the title, what would they look like in 3D?
An artist has used 3D modelling software Blender, as well as the original textures from the iconic games, to give us a taster of what these games would have looked like if they were actually 3D games. More importantly, what they would look like using 1990’s 3D technology.
I must admit, I never knew I wanted this kind of retro-rebuild of the games, but looking at these teaser images, I’d be totally up for trying it out. Who knows, maybe this is enough of a temptation to spark the interest of the wider modding community, and someone will pick up such an ambitious project.
I wonder what other games from that era would look this good with a little 3D treatment. What do you think? Let me know in the comments section below!
