Several (unnamed) developers at major studios have been suggesting that the Wii U’s graphical horse power is weaker that the current gen of hardware from Sony and Microsoft.
In an interview with GamesIndustry.biz a source said “No, it’s not up to the same level as the PS3 or the 360. The graphics are just not as powerful.” Another developer also agreed: “Yeah, that’s true. It doesn’t produce graphics as well as the PS3 or the 360. There aren’t as many shaders, it’s not as capable. Sure, some things are better, mostly as a result of it being a more modern design. But overall the Wii U just can’t quite keep up.”
It’s believed Nintendo have had to make sacrifices in the systems main power house to subsidise the cost of the expensive to produce Wii U tablet controller, but was it really worth it at the cost of GPU, CPU and RAM cuts? especially if it means each console can only support 1 of the snazzy new iPad-a-like controllers?
Ok so the graphics may not be on par with the current gen, but developers need time to get the most out of hardware, this much we know, just go pop in some release titles from your PS3 and Xbox 360 to reminded yourself what I’m talking about.
With the PS3 and Vita already capable of offering the same level of interaction that will be available on the Wii-U, its going to be a tough year for Nintendo, but while I won’t be buying the Wii-U, not for a while anyway, I do hope it is a success.
