Windows 11 Update Looks to Improve (Well… Fix) Gaming Performance Bug

When comparing overall market share figures, it seems pretty clear that the gaming community has almost certainly been more proactive in ‘upgrading’ to Windows 11 than average consumers. Why? I have no idea, but possibly just on the merits that people who game are probably more likely to both be aware of the existence of the operating system, and, of course, the likelihood that it will, sooner or later, become such a necessity that we might as well get used to it now!
Ever since the release of Windows 11 a little under a year ago, however, a known issue has potentially been causing the operating systems gaming performance to not be as good as it should’ve been. – Following a report via PCGamesN, however, the good news is that an official update is on the way that, all going well, will finally solve and resolve this issue for good!
Windows 11 Update To Improve Gaming Performance?
The issue has predominantly lay within Windows 11’s Shell Infrastructure Host. An integral part of pretty much all Windows systems that effectively handles the start menu, taskbar, and general graphical interfaces. – What issue has it been causing though? Well, in very basic terms, the process (sihost.exe) has had the occasional tendency to start grabbing CPU resources while gaming which, by proxy, has caused some systems to report generally slower than expected speeds and/or brief but notable performance drops.
Now, before you all start marching off with your pitchforks and flaming torches to Microsoft HQ, the chances that while the majority of Windows 11 users have experienced this issue at some point or another, 95% of them probably haven’t noticed it. It does seem to only mostly represent a problem on relatively benign CPUs running games that are really pushing their limits.
The new upcoming KB5016700 update, however, should finally look to solve this problem permanently which, by proxy for some of you, will likely result in your Windows 11 PC or laptop running games notably better in the future!
When Will It Be Out?
With the fix currently part of the latest Windows Insider test builds, it is expected to form a full commercial release as part of the major Windows 11 22H2 update scheduled for some point in late September. As some of you may be aware, Windows 11 has transitioned to one major update per year when compared to the two predominantly seen during the lifespan of Windows 10 so expect 22H2 to bring a lot of general performance improvement and, overall, enhanced stability features.
Even if, according to some sources, the update will also mark the death of the old-school ‘Control Panel’ that many older Windows users will be exceptionally familiar with!
