World says Boo to Blu-Ray

Blu-Ray has now settled in and put its feet up in the multimedia world, but isn’t allowed to get as comfy as it would like to in some people’s homes.

Harris Interactive released details of a poll showing that one in ten Americans own a HD DVD player, but that only seven percent of them owned a Blu-ray player. The results from this poll included owners of Sony’s Blu-ray capable Playstation 3.

The poll was presented to 2,401 American adults, which also showed that given the choice to switch to Blu-ray from their standard format, two out of five people would prefer to wait for the prices of drives and consumables to drop before venturing into it. Only one in five were happy to replace their existing format library to this new more expensive Blu-ray format.

Milton Ellis (VP at Harris Interactive) said “Blu-ray also faces competition from alternative technologies such as cable, satellite and the Internet.” As more and more people use computers and as websites including YouTube and BBC iPlayer upgrade their systems to support larger, clearer, High Definition footage, Blu-ray is forced to taking a back seat, at least until the prices settle.
