The X-Files is returning once more – maybe for the last time – and the first trailer for the new season is out now. David Duchovny and Gillian Anderson return as the iconic Mulder and Scully for the 10-episode season 11, which airs on FOX early-2018. In fact, the trailer shows a long-dormant plot thread is being resurrected in the forthcoming season.
The trailer debuted at this year’s New York Comic Con. The cast – including Duchovny, Anderson, and Mitch Pileggi (Skinner) – and series creator Chris Carter all dropped teases about the new episodes.
The biggest revelation in the trailer is the fresh hunt for Mulder and Scully’s son, William. Born during season eight of the show’s original run, William was adopted by another family in season 9. Subsequently, his location remained a mystery. However, the new season brings William back into play, according to Carter. He said (via Io9):
“[We] explore that relationship, the father-son-mother relationship, [and] you’ll see more of William than you’ve seen in a long time.”
Is season 11 set to be the end of The X-Files? At least, it could mark the final appearance of Dana Scully. In an NYCC press session, Anderson responded to a question asking if she’s returning for more X-Files (via Screen Rant):
“No, no, I think this will be it for me.”
In a follow-up question:
[Press:] “So, why did you want to do this season?”
Gillian Anderson: “Because it felt like it wasn’t over. It didn’t feel like we necessarily deliver everything the fans were expecting of us last time, and so it was that.”
