Xbox Explains Tango Gameworks Closure Amid Leadership Changes

The sudden closure of Tango Gameworks, known for Hi-Fi Rush, has left the gaming community in shock. Recently, Xbox Game Studios head Matt Booty provided insight into the decision, hinting at leadership changes as a key factor.
Why Tango Gameworks Closed
In a recent interview, Booty emphasized that the decision aimed to focus resources on more impactful games. However, the departure of Shinji Mikami, the founder of Tango Gameworks, significantly influenced the closure. Mikami, known for creating Resident Evil, left the studio in 2023. Booty suggested that Mikami’s exit raised concerns about the studio’s ability to replicate its past successes.
Booty highlighted the importance of having the right creative leadership for sustained success. The closure of Tango Gameworks, despite the success of Hi-Fi Rush, illustrates the uncertainties of the gaming industry. Booty mentioned, “We have to ask ourselves, are we set up for success going forward?”
Booty also noted that closing Tango Gameworks wasn’t the only option considered. He referenced other Xbox-owned studios, like Toys For Bob and Twisted Pixel, which transitioned to independent status with new publishing deals. This indicates that Xbox explores various business options before making final decisions.
