2K has announced that hit turn-based strategy – and former PC exclusive – XCOM 2 is coming to consoles later this year. XCOM 2, the sequel to 2012’s XCOM: Enemy Unknown and reboot of Microprose’s X-COM/UFO series, will arrive on Xbox One and PlayStation 4 in September 2016.
“Firaxis has successfully enhanced the XCOM franchise, as XCOM 2 has earned both massive critical and fan acclaim,” Matt Gorman, Vice President of marketing for 2K, said. “Many console gamers have been vocal about bringing XCOM 2 to their platforms, and now they can look forward to joining the resistance this September.”
XCOM 2 follows on from XCOM: Enemy Unknown, but this time around the Earth has already been invaded by hostile aliens. The player is tasked with organising the remaining XCOM operatives and resources to form an effective resistance and help take earth back. The console versions of the game seem to be the same as the PC release, with its procedurally generated levels and punishing difficulty, but with updated controls.
“The incredible reception of XCOM 2 has been rewarding and humbling for the team, and we’ve known console fans have been clamoring to play the game too,” Jake Solomon, Creative Director of XCOM 2 at Firaxis Games, added. “As avid console players ourselves, we’re excited to work with The Workshop to bring XCOM 2 to all of our fans.”
