XFX Pro 750W XXX Edition Power Supply Review

Conclusion

Pricing

XFX have, as expected, opted for very competitive pricing on this power supply and it costs £86.10 in the UK from one of our preferred UK retailers. This actually makes it slightly cheaper than the Seasonic unit that it is based on. In the USA our readers can find the power supply for around $110-120 which makes it an excellent value proposition when compared to the competition.

Conclusion

The XFX Pro 750W XXX Edition power supply is a nice unit. Competitive pricing aside we can see the unit is rock solid in terms of power delivery and delivers the efficiency it promises with strong PFC and super tight noise/ripple suppression. Realistically if you compare its voltage regulation and noise/ripple suppression to a much more expensive unit that costs nearly three times as much you’d see very little difference between them. So if you’re looking for super clean and super stable power then this unit offers exactly that in abundance, the 80 Plus Bronze rating is more than enough for most users needs too so I think XFX have done well to balance performance and efficiency. The selection of modular cables are also very nice and overall the design looks pretty sweet in terms of aesthetics thanks to the black modular cables. The 5 year warranty is also a bit of a deal sweetener too because you know this PSU is going to last you a long time.

However, I do have concerns with the product. Firstly the fan noise after about 40-50% load is really loud. There’s no questioning it is loud and if you stress your system a lot and don’t like noise this will drive you absolutely nuts. 1650 RPM for 60% load is just not on in my honest opinion, there is no way that unit needs that much cooling and it just ruins the user experience. Secondly, I am bemused as to why some versions of the Pro 750W XXX use 80 Plus Bronze and others use 80 Plus Silver. I think XFX need to sort this out and go with one or the other, personally I think Bronze is more than enough for a unit of this price but knowing that U.S buyers can get a Silver rated unit for the same price makes me feel like the EU and the UK are being short changed a bit. Finally I feel like the attention to detail on the hard wired cables should be a little bit better – they should of sleeved all the way to the ends since they went to such effort on the modular cables.

Pros

  • Voltage regulation is top draw
  • Great Ripple/Noise suppression
  • Competitive pricing
  • Semi-Modular design and nice modular cabling
  • 5 Year Warranty

Cons

  • Annoyingly loud at medium and high loads
  • Efficiency is inconsistent between SKUs
  • Hard wired cables not fully sleeved

“XFX’s Pro 750W XXX Edition power supply is a really top level performer and for the money is one of the best power supplies you can get in terms of raw performance. However, the noise really puts a downer on what is a fantastic power supply and that, paired with the inconsistencies over efficiency, disappoints me. If you can manage to grab the 80 Plus Silver variant and you can put up with the loud fan then this PSU could be for you, but when there are other options that perform similarly with much less noise for a similar cost, I can’t help but feel this PSU might be one to avoid until XFX fix the fan profile.”

Thank you to XFX for providing this review sample.
