The idea of having a video site has clearly been on Yahoo’s agenda for quite some time now, late last month it was going to buy a majority share in Daily Motion but the French government blocked the deal and it fell through. Therefore, it isn’t that surprising to see reports of Yahoo having another go at getting a video site but this time Hulu is the video site of choice.
Hulu has been the target of takeover speculation for many years now. For those who remember Microsoft did actually consider a takeover back in late 2011 but the deal was abandoned. Currently Directv, Time Warner Cable, William Morris Endeavor, KKR, Guggenheim Digital and The Chernin Group are all reportedly interested in acquiring the company, in addition to Yahoo.
With such high interest in Hulu it remains to be seen whether Hulu’s owners (News Corp, Disney and Comcast) would be willing to sell the company. Should they decide to sell the price is surely going to be high and after 10 acquisitions Yahoo may not have the resources to pursue the acquisition.
What are your thoughts on Yahoo getting their hands on Hulu? Could it happen? Would it benefit them in any way?
