Do you need a hand? How about six of them? Oh, how often have we heard the expression ‘I need an extra pair of hands’. Well now you can hand them, quite literally.
Youbionic have revealed their robotic hands that can work in up to 2 pairs, giving you 6 hands in total. Well, that’s handy, isn’t it!
The company, which started in 2014, has just released video footage of their robotic hand which claims to be able to operate to give you 3 functional hands on each arm. With your 2 existing fleshy ones, that means you could have 6 hands in total.
The technology is designed to work on your existing hands and muscles, meaning that with a little training, the robotic hand can mimic and even anticipate movements.
A good question and the short answer is that I have no idea. Initially, I presumed it was some form of medical prosthetic and while it potentially could go down that road, it doesn’t appear to be the angle they are taking on their website.
The website rather seems to push the idea that the hand can be produced by 3d printing giving people the option to have a pair (or 2) of these in their own home. You can, of course, purchase a working set now if you wish.
The 3d printer data files are reasonably inexpensive at $244. You do, of course, at that point have to actually print them and then work in the robotics. If you want a fully functional set, the price goes a little steep and by steep I mean vertical. A working pair of the Youbionic gloves will set you back around $2,200.
If nothing else, however, if would allow you to give a rather more cynical answer if anyone ever asks you for a hand again.
