YouTube Announce $5m Investment To Promote Positive Creators

YouTube

It’s certainly been a difficult year for YouTube. Well, at least difficult in regards to negative news stories. Between fake news, the spread of hate content and continually seemingly wishing to undermine their content creators who don’t have several million followers, very little has been positive for the community.

Only in recent weeks, YouTube again changes their monetization policy meaning that thousands of low-level users were now cut out of it completely.

In a report via Polygon, however, in an attempt to help new or low-level users, YouTube has promised to invest $5m.

Social Media Influencer

With this investment, the video hosting website is looking to encourage new or low-level users to create new content. There are, however, some minor stipulations.

Put simply, eating a soap detergent tablet isn’t going to be good enough for you to qualify for this.

The new investment follows their initial 2016 launch of ‘Creators for Change’.

Creators for Change

To qualify for part of the project and funding you must make content which is of an overall positive nature. Initially, YouTube touched on this in 2016 with their ‘Creators for Change’ program in which they wished for positive content to attempt to out-weight negative or hateful.

It clearly didn’t work then, but perhaps a $5m investment will make it work now.

How do I qualify?

The short and simple answer is to create content which has a positive influence.

Juniper Downs, YouTube’s head of public policy has said: “We will engage more creators in the program, arm the wider YouTube community with new tools and education on how to create change, and empower more young people to use their voices to encourage positive social messages.”

The contentious question of monetization is deftly avoided in this announcement and some users will still question, despite the investment, what motivation any users have to try and make it any more.

What do you think? Will the investment help or has YouTube killed its upcoming creator’s motivation? – Let us know in the comments!
