YouTube Go was initially announced back in September as a means for users with limited bandwidth or capped data to be able to download YouTube videos and watch them offline, but is now finally available via the Google Play store. It works similarly to NetFlix’ offline download feature but much more data friendly and allows users to select between downloading the 240p basic quality or 360p standard quality with the file size on display. This app is currently only available in India and specifically targets consumers with a 2G connection. The app itself is still technically in beta but it features several more features than just the ability to download. Users can choose between local storage or saving to the SD card and it also allows users to share the video with friends directly over Wi-Fi.
The app is available in eight Indian languages and shows the local trending videos depending on the region at the homepage. Some features are missing on YouTube Go compared to the full fledged YouTube app however such as comments (including viewing it) and the ability to sort/access playlists. There is a search function however. Since it is designed for users on a 2G connection, it is also mindful to run as light as possible for users equipped with a less powerful phone. The apps download size is only 8MB and only uses up 33MB when installed. Usage requires signing up with a phone number which can match to a Google mail account if already associated with one.
The YouTube Go app is just one example of Google’s commitment to the Indian market. Google has rolled out free Wi-Fi initiative to over 100 train stations across the South Asian nation and plans to launch new initiatives aimed at helping small Indian business go online. For now, YouTube Go is strictly limited to that region but since it seems to be a very simple enough idea that can be translated to other developing markets who require it as well if the adoption rate is sufficient.
