Industry sources are saying that YouTube is preparing to buy Twitch. The Google owned company is looking to buy out the popular video game streaming service in an all cash deal that is worth a staggering $1 billion, and it’s no surprise that the biggest video website in the world doesn’t want someone else barging in on their territory, so the easiest thing to do is buy them out.
To put the size of this cash deal into perspective, Google paid $1.65 billion for YouTube back in 2006, so it just goes to show how big the Twitch service has become in the last couple of years. This is a big deal for both YouTube and Twitch, but what this means for the future of the Twitch service is currently unclear, although we are expecting an official release from YouTube some time later today to pack out the extra details.
With 45 million monthly users, 1 million of which upload videos each month, Twitch has become an internet sensation, with the rise in popularity of eSports as well as game streaming technology in general obviously playing a big part in those figures.
