Nintendo Explains Why Switch 2 is Backward Compatible

Nintendo Explains Why Switch 2 is Backward Compatible

Nintendo has confirmed that the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2 will feature backward compatibility, allowing users to play games from the original Nintendo Switch. While this decision might seem expected, it marks a significant step for the company, especially considering how past transitions (like from Wii U discs to Switch cartridges) did not support backward compatibility.

A Nintendo spokesperson explained this decision in response to a query from Stephen Totilo of Game File. The statement emphasized that the large existing player base on the current Switch influenced the company’s strategy.

According to Nintendo, the goal is to ensure users can enjoy their already purchased Nintendo Switch games on the new console. The Switch 2 will support exclusive titles for the new console as well as physical and digital games from the original Switch. However, the company noted that some titles might not be fully compatible with Switch 2. Detailed compatibility information will be shared later on Nintendo’s website.

Nintendo will provide more updates about the console during the Nintendo Direct for Switch 2, scheduled for April 2, 2025. The decision reflects Nintendo’s intention to retain its loyal player base by making the transition to the new generation seamless.
