Medicine Powered by Bioelectric Technology Backed by Google

When it comes to medicines, science is going further and further in hand with technology in order to help and develop entirely new lengths in previously unexplored areas. Google is looking to team up with GlaxoSmithKline (GSK), a British pharmaceutical giant who is looking at using bioelectric technology to research a new way to treat chronic diseases.

The two companies have agreed to form a new company, Galvani Bioelectrics, named after Luigi Aloisio Galvani, an Italian scientist who is considered a pioneer of bioelectric research. With the new company headquartered in the UK with a secondary research hub in San Francisco, the company is looking at an area of medicine that is relatively unexplored.

Galvani Bioelectrics will focus on the “research, development and commercialization” of bioelectronics, the idea of applying electric currents to help treat everything from arthritis and asthma to type 2 diabetes. With the drug companies experience in medicine combined with the Googles various different companies and their experience with low power miniaturised electronics could show an entirely different generation of medicines that could help people who suffer from everyday illnesses.

With only 30 people employed initially, the new company will have access to both parent companies details and institutions, including both R&D and academic groups.
