Windows 8 Preview users can get $39.99 upgrade to final version

Microsoft recently announced that Windows 7, Vista and XP users with a legitimate license would all be able to upgrade to Windows 8 for just $39.99. Meaning those with cracked copies of Windows or older than XP operating systems wouldn’t be able to access the special offer, and would probably have to pay $70-$100 for a standard priced license.

But in a turn of events Microsoft has announced that it will let all Windows 8 Preview users access this reduced price upgrade too. It has also been pointed out that there is no clear cut distinction between Windows 8 Home and Windows 8 Pro so all users will probably be able to choose either Pro or Home for the same price of $39.99.

The term “upgrade” can be a tad decieving. Those who buy the “upgrade” will actually end up with a fresh installation of Windows 8 with their files and most application settings saved, but everything else will be wiped. To upgrade you can simply download the Upgrade Assistant.

This makes for welcoming news as Microsoft are essentially offering their cheapest OS ever. At just $39.99 we’d highly recommend that you grab yourself a copy. It is expected the offer will last until January 31st 2013. If you want to download the Windows 8 Release Preview for free and have a look around, then you can get the downloads below. Its also worth giving it a download if you think you may want to pick up Windows 8 for $39.99 and don’t currently have a legitimate license of XP, Vista or 7.

  1. “Cheapest OS ever”? LOL. OS X Lion costs 29.99$ last I checked, so yeah. Then there’s Mobile OSs which are pretty much 100% free AFAIK…… So, yeah.

  2. The ‘FAQ page’ link takes me to the Windows 8 $14.99 Upgrade Offer for people who purchased a Windows 7 PC between June 2nd 2012 and January 31st 2013. No where on that page do I see an upgrade offer for people with legal XP/Vista/7 licenses or Windows 8 RP to upgrade to Windows 8 for $39.99…
