North Korea Denies Involvement With Sony Hack

A North Korean official in New York has denied their involvement in the monumental Sony Pictures hack.

While Re/code said yesterday that both Sony and security specialists FireEye were imminently expected to reveal North Korea as the perpetrators, the BBC now says that they’ve denied this.

The North Korean diplomat told broadcaster Voice of America that the idea of the country being behind the hack was a “fabrication”. This comes after another North Korean official told the BBC to “wait and see”, neither confirming or denying any involvement.

“Linking [North Korea] to the Sony hacking is another fabrication targeting the country,” he told the broadcaster.

“My country publicly declared that it would follow international norms banning hacking and piracy.”

A number of security experts have since chimed in to say that the attack appears consistent with previous breaches by the secretive state, most notably one called ‘Dark Seoul’ carried out last year upon the South Korean government. The Sony Pictures hack is shaping up to be one of the most disruptive corporate breaches in history, with the leak of some of the company’s big name movies threatening their profits.
