Owning more than a few Android devices, be it a tablet or smartphone, I think it’s pretty safe to say that I almost certainly have Netflix installed on all of them. As I daresay, many of you do too. Well, if you have and have a few complaints about the overall audio quality via the streaming service, then there is some excellent news!
Following a report via The Verge, Netflix has released a new update to the Android version of its app that, through a new codec should significantly improve the overall sound quality.

Now available on the Netflix app for Android devices (on version 9 or higher), the new xHE-AAC codec has been provided in the latest update and, as a key factor, has been specifically designed to provide significant audio improvement across various environments. In announcing its launch, Netflix has said that it should “improve intelligibility in noisy environments, adapt to variable cellular connections, and scale to studio-quality.”
In other words, it should look to provide users with a more clear and consistent amount of audio clarity. For example, if you’re in an environment with a lot of background noise or you’re having to crank up the volume to hear parts of dialogue.
What Do We Think?
The update should already be automatically applied to your Android device and, as such, you probably already have it ready to go. With it more than likely being targeted towards improving the audio experience for users with relatively poor quality phone speakers (not uncommon for cheaper Android devices), this should, all going well, prove to be a new and welcome addition for many!
