Windows Update Causing 100% Disk Usage – Get The Fix Here!

Disk

Since launch, Windows 10 has received a fairly mixed response due to the controversy surrounding data collection and irritating bugs. Personally, I’ve not encountered any major problems and think it’s a solid operating system which greatly improves on Windows 8.1. However, a recent update caused my Samsung SM951 boot drive’s utilisation to spike during idle scenarios. Rather oddly, the disk usage hovers around 99%-100% and appears to stem from the System process. Initially, I went through the usual process of disabling Windows Search, Superfetch and Notifications which can all lead to this common problem. Despite this, nothing changed and I was becoming increasingly annoyed. Thankfully, the problem is easy to fix and the solution was discovered by the Reddit user /u/Zahand who deserves a lot of credit!

It appears the Windows Performance Recorder is the root cause which started malfunctioning in the latest update. This particular feature logs system events to the operating system’s drive which you can assess to perform diagnostics. To disable the service, open a command prompt as a system administrator, then type “WPR -cancel”. Once complete, this should return the disk utilisation back down to more normal levels. On the other hand, there are cases when this only works within the current session and rebooting requires the service to be cancelled using the same process. As a result, the fix appears to be only a temporary measure until Microsoft launch an official patch.

  1. i have that problem for a while in windows 8.1, i also sometimes get this KERNEL_DATA_INPAGE_ERROR after if happens, never the C drive

  2. If your windows 10 PC is undergoing 100% disk usage, then disable search services by opening services in taskbar search , opening services manager and disable windows search service. You may also disable windows update service, but you have to enable it after few days, as disabling windows 10 update service is not recommended. Also disable superfetch and Background apps.
To disable background apps just go to settings – privacy – background apps and disable background apps.

  3. I have been plagued by disk usage 100% for a long time. my computer toshiba satellite running win 8.1 upgraded online to win 10. problem started w 10 restored system to 8.1. problem came back while updating. I removed 4 updates before I got the right one. It had lable of HOT FIX but I didn’t write down the KB number.

Yesterday I installed 4 critical updates and here it came again disk 100%. I removed KB4095875 and disk usage returned to normal.

I think this problem is a self inflicted wound caused by updates from Microsoft updates. Keep records and when the problem appears remove updates (keeping records of those removed) until you find the one that is responsible for your problem. different updates may cause different problems according to your MFG. and OS.

    Good luck.
