Netflix Denies Accusations of Recent VPN Blocking

Netflix has denied report that emerged last week that it was blocking VPNs to protect its region locks.

The media-streaming company offers a quantity of films and TV shows that are specific to a certain country of region due to complex studio licensing agreements, but astute users have navigated around the region locks using VPNs, allowing them to pretend to be from another country to watch locked content. But TorGuard, a popular VPN, recently revealed that a number of requests to access Netflix through its service have been denied.

TorGuard told TorrentFreak, “This is a brand new development. A few weeks ago we received the first report from a handful of clients that Netflix blocked access due to VPN or proxy usage. This is the very first time I’ve ever heard Netflix displaying this type of error message to a VPN user.”

But Netflix disputes the claim that it has changed the way it filters regional content, and that it can’t explain the recent access failures. “Netflix simply uses industry standard methods to prevent illegal VPN use,” a company spokesperson said.
