Project Scorpio Will Be a Premium Console According to Phil Spencer
I’m sure that many of you are quite excited about Microsoft’s upcoming Project Scorpio console, and fortunately, Xbox Head Phil Spencer has decided to shed some more light on this new product during a recent interview. Up until now, we thought that Scorpio would feature a price tag similar to other consoles on the market, but Spencer hinted that it will actually be more expensive than the Xbox One S, and it will be aimed at “premium” clients. He also went ahead and clarified exactly what “premium” is supposed to mean:
“I call it a premium console because I want people to be clear that the customer we’re building that for is the premium gaming customer. The person who buys the majority of the games, the person who’s playing the most games, spending the most hours, spending the most dollars. It’s like our Elite controller. I call that a premium controller.”
He also had a few words to say about the console’s price, which will apparently be fair and balanced in regards to Scorpio’s performance:
“I’m not trying to scare anybody on the price. We’re going to come out on a price that we think is fair for the product that we build and the customers will tell us as they always do. I call it premium because I don’t want people to get confused that somehow Scorpio is the thing that is going to take over the Xbox line.”
Even though he didn’t state an exact price tag or even a ballpark figure, Phil did say that the Xbox One S will likely remain Microsoft’s top seller, which means that Project Scorpio will indeed come with a higher price.
Sounds like a $600 to $700 investment for Scorpio.
I bet 499 anything higher it will flop
They have a real opportunity to make significant ground here if they price it correctly. If they are smart it will sell for 400. You know if it’s anything higher Sony will drop their pro price and eat Microsoft’s lunch. I think 499 is to high. We have already seen what a $100 difference does in this cycle. Have Microsoft learned this lesson? It will be interesting to see.
I am rooting for Microsoft in this. I sold my Xb1 a fee months ago while I could still get a decent price for it. I liked the system but I just use my ps4 a lot more. They don’t charge tax for digital games and MS does. It adds up so I bought all my 3rd party games on PS4.
I really hope Scorpio is all it can be and more. Healthy competition is vital for a healthy gaming community.
I agree 400 is a great selling price! Anything higher may screw them
Right? It just makes sense! The PS Pro is 400 and from what I understand it is a bit underwhelming. MS has the opportunity to release a much more powerful and rewarding experience with the Scorpio providing they release compelling games that take advantage of that power. High frame rate, 4k resolution, backward compatibility and V.R support at $400 would smash the competition. MS would realistically take a loss of every system sold until the first revision but it is the necessary action to retake customer loyalty and respect. They have been absolutely outclassed and outgunned so far. Unless they make the required investment they will forever be in last place. There is only one weapon they have over Sony. They can out spend Sony massively. It’s time to put up or shut up I say. ?
But no one has ever said “premium” console… They can just sell for a loss and add a VR headset for about $499-549…
Phil Spencer said premium console.
If they add a VR controller, it’ll be the usual loss on console, profit from games… But remember, ALL consoles are ONE chip… The board, storage and AM are commodity prices so the real cost of an AMD console is the chip…
I’m just curious if MS is going to stick with Jaguar or go big with a 2GHz Ryzen… They need at least a 480 level card for console 4K (lots less overhead)…
They’ve already said it will be a 6TFLOPS console, which is huge. More than that 480 for sure. That’s 3 times a GTX980.
Also, highly doubt it’ll use Ryzen. It’s only just come out and this console will have been i development for a couple of years. They’ll be using something at least that old.
Shame they didn’t go for the Intel route as that’d make porting and such way easier, plus Intel’s are better gaming CPUs.
This is going to absolutely hammer Sony. The PS4 Pro is a huge, huge mistake and should’ve been put off as soon as Microsoft announced and spec’d the Scorpio.
The Scorpio will be about 3 times more powerful than the Pro, have proper 4k support (which I still think is totally ridiculous for a console when PC’s are massively expensive still) and 4k Blu-ray.
What annoys me the most is that the PS4 Pro and Scorpio are coming out with the aim for 30FPS, STILL. 30FPS needs to die in a fire. I’ve been playing Horizon: Zero Dawn and it looks lovely, but it’s 30FPS and you can tell. It makes games sluggish. Metal Gear Solid V did it right on both accounts. 1080p@60FPS. Fluid controls and it still looked amazing.
