AMD Introduces AI-Powered FSR 4 to Boost Visual Quality and Battery Life on Portable Devices

AMD has announced the upcoming FidelityFX Super Resolution 4 (FSR 4) technology, leveraging AI to improve visual quality and gaming performance. FSR 4 is designed to deliver sharper graphics and smoother gameplay, even on less powerful hardware, by utilizing advanced AI techniques. The technology marks AMD’s shift toward more efficient, AI-driven upscaling, similar to NVIDIA DLSS and Intel XeSS, which have been using AI for several years.

According to Jack Huynh (thanks Tomshardware), Senior Vice President of AMD, FSR 4 will not only improve visuals but also significantly enhance battery life for portable gaming devices. Players will have the option to lock framerates at 30 or 35 FPS, extending gaming sessions on devices like the ASUS ROG Ally and Lenovo Legion Go. Huynh emphasized the importance of balancing battery life with visual fidelity, particularly for handheld devices.

AI and Frame Generation Integration

AMD’s focus on AI follows years of development, with FSR 4 now incorporating frame generation and interpolation technology. This technology aims to improve both visuals and battery performance, especially for gamers on the go. Huynh stated, “We’re adding AI-based frame generation and interpolation to increase efficiency and maximize battery life.”

The use of AI in AMD’s FSR 4 technology is expected to be similar to the Spectral Super Resolution (PSSR) used in the PlayStation 5 Pro, a technology that enhances image quality without sacrificing performance. This integration highlights AMD’s shift toward AI as a key feature in its future graphics architecture.

AMD’s next-generation RDNA 4 GPUs will be the first to fully support FSR 4, marking a significant step forward for the company in the AI-driven gaming space.
