Microsoft’s Steve Ballmer made it publicly known at a conference in Japan that Microsoft would be picking up its preparations for the next generation of Windows later this year. Steve Ballmer claimed that we would be seeing the rise of Windows 8 on a variety of form factors, Slates, tablets, mobile handsets, laptops and desktop computers.
Although Steve Ballmer gave little else away about the next generation of windows OS, widely accepted to be windows 8, it is clear Microsoft is not looking to milk its position in the desktop and laptop market but expand into the mobile computing market and take advantage of these new Tablet and slate PCs. However, it is still not yet known whether this signifies a change in the approach of Microsoft towards operating systems.
Another thing to take note of is that Microsoft is now looking to decrease the time between releases of new operating systems. Whilst there were 6 years between Windows XP and Windows Vista , there were only 2 Years between Vista and 7. It looks like there will also be a similar time frame between 7 and 8 even with the success of Windows 7.
The start of the windows 8 launch is expected to be signalled with the release of the Windows 8 phone operating system late this year.
Not happy to see them being released more often.They should spend extra time and built it to last like xp.It's annoying to have some new os released only a few months after u bought urs 🙁

I agree. If the upgrade option is priced smartly and worth it, then Microsoft will fill its piggy bank quickly. If not, Microsoft will still make a profit… however, investors will be disappointed because of the lower than expected return. Stock price might fall a bit. On the business side, Microsoft is doing what they think will maximize revenue and profits by shortening the release time between OS's. Good strategy. Consumers benefit by having a better product (hopefully), but end up paying for upgrades they don't necessarily need… but want. The Jedi Mind-Trick of marketing.

I used to use XP like most of the people, and what they did with Vista, "NOT", I have now took the plunge to Windows 7 and must admit that I do like it, it works out off the box, so it will be a long time before I upgrade to another Windows version. From what I have read there will not be leaps and bounds between 7 and 8 anyway. If they are going to release a new version every 2-3 years, makes you wonder if they all ready no just what they are going to put in Windows 10 never mind 8. At the end of the day Microsoft will not lose out.
i agree that if the new OS is better, then its good upgrading, but i would prefer MS to just release a good OS that will be kept constantly updated and secure for years instead of another new OS just a couple of years later.its good business on MS's part, but its kinda annoying having to pay again even if it is a reduced upgrade price.i also dont wanna switch OS too often because with a new OS it takes a fair bit of time to get used to it and to carry out your usual tasks to their peak efficiency. if the OS changes on a more regular basis, i can see problems being caused for slower learners and also software developers who have to make their software work with multiple OS just from MS.let's hope MS have everything planned correctly to keep us consumers happy tho :p!
