SilverStone launches USB 3.0 RAID Enclosure

SilverStone has launched its new DS321 dual-3.5″ drive USB 3.0 RAID enclosure. The product was first made public at Computex 2011 this year in Taiwan and is now officially being launched. The enclosure holds two 3.5″ drives or two 2.5″ drives in its two drive bays. It can take up to 2TB of storage in total and supports RAID 0 which is to get the maximum performance or RAID 1 which allows for data redundancy protection. The drive interacts with the computer of the 5GB/s USB 3.0 connection which is only 1GB/s less than SATA III 6GB/s but interestingly a lot faster than the old SATA II connection so it should bring impressive results.

The enclosure measures up at 182 x 123 x 81 mm and uses an external power brick to power the drives and the single 40mm exhaust fan which keeps the drives in the enclosure cool. The fan can ramp up to 2800RPM if needed. The drive enclosure its officially available today but set to hit European retailers by the 16th of August (this month) and it will cost €59.70 (without VAT).

  1. this is great to place my movie folders. It goes together with my Silverstone Case. By the way do i need to set up Raid 0 or can i make it RAID 1 ( believe that is the mirror). ANd what is VAT

  2. I would probably do RAID 0 because that's the fastest, but i think RAID 1 is to ensure data integrity from hard drive failure whilst RAID 0 is to ensure maximum performance. VAT is Value Added Tax its a tax on items once they are sold varies from about 15-25% between countries so if its 60 euros without VAT after VAT it could well be 70 Euros
