AMD Ryzen 7 2700U APU Brings MX150 Performance

2700U

In the near future, AMD is set to launch their new Raven Ridge APUs. The new chips should offer unprecedented APU performance with a Zen CPU and Vega iGPU. Due to the improved performance and efficiency, AMD fans should be getting a significant upgrade. This is especially evident in the confines of a mobile platform. We now have leaked performance for the new Ryzen 7 2700U and it is impressive.

In 3DMark 11, the chip scores 4212 overall, 4072 graphics score, 6419 physics score and 3353 combined score. These are all very impressive scores and essentially more than doubles the old top end AMD APUs. In fact, these results place it within striking distance of Intel’s i5 8205U at 6568 physics score and Nvidia’s MX150 at 4570 graphics score. This makes the 2700U a mobile gaming champion.

Ryzen 7 2700U Handicapped by 35W TDP

On the other hand, it’s important to note the limitations of the Ryzen 7 2700U. First up is the TDP of the chip which is set at 35W. This places it firmly into notebook sized form factor and outside ultrabooks. Given the current trend, it may be hard to find the chip in mainstream laptops. These results were also likely possible due to top end cooling and dual channel DDR4. With OEMs known to skimp out, real-world performance should be lower. This is before you consider the effects of running both graphics and physics at the same time in a smaller TDP.

Last of all, this information comes from an unverified source. Considering the performance we have seen from Vega, the graphics results seem optimistic. Even the Polaris 11 based Radeon Pro 450 with 640 GCN shaders at 800 MHz with dedicated memory is barely able to reach these numbers. Hopefully, these numbers do turn out to be real and AMD will have a real winner on their hands.

  1. Correction: the Ryzen 7 2700U runs within a 15W TDP. Just verify this through the leaked documentation of Raven Ridge laptops which specify the power ratings of the included power supplies to be exactly in line with what a laptop with a 15W CPU would have, not a 35W CPU.
